Not All Cookware is Created Equal

Do you know which kitchen appliances use the most energy?

Let’s face it! How often do we think about the appliances we have in our kitchen that may consume too much electricity? Rarely!

Refrigerators

According to Energy.gov, ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators use 15% less electricity than non-qualified models. Try not keeping your refrigerator or your freezer too cold. The recommended temperatures are 35°-38°F for the fresh food compartment and 0° F for separate freezers for long-term storage.

Dishwashers

If you’ve read any of our past blogs you’ve learned that using dishwashers vs handwashing could help save electricity. However, there still may be electricity consumption that you may still have to watch out for. According to energy.gov, most of the energy used by a dishwasher is for water heating. Look up their EnergyGuide label for more information and estimates on how much power per year may be used to run appliances and to heat water based on the yearly cost of natural gas and electric water heating.

Toaster Oven

You put bread in it for one minute and it toasts—how much electricity does it actually use? A toaster oven consumes usually 1,200 watts after one hour. The toaster oven is usually is only used for a few minutes at a time, so it doesn’t consume too much energy during the time used.
