How Does PrePaid Electricity Work for Apartments and Homes?

How Does PrePaid Electricity Work for Apartments and Homes?

If you've always paid for your electricity usage after-the-fact, then you're probably not too familiar with the idea of pre-paying for electricity. Whether you live in a home or an apartment, pre-paying for your electricity usage is an option through Frontier Utilities.

As you might assume, this means you would pay the utility company a pre-determined amount per kilowatt-hour for electricity you plan to use in the future, and then you would set about using that electricity to power your home. It's the opposite of what most people are used to—using as much electricity as they need, and then paying for it.

When you prepay for your electricity, you do not receive a monthly bill. Rather, you purchase a certain number of kilowatt-hours up front. When your "balance" of kilowatt-hours drops below a certain trigger amount, you purchase more. You will receive notification from the utility company that your balance is getting low so that you know it's time to prepay for additional kWhs. Depending on your preferences, this notification can be sent via text message, phone call, or email.

Low balance notifications are sent at least 3 days before your account balance is expected to drop below the trigger amount ($10 or about 70 kWhs) so you have plenty of time to purchase more. If your account balance should drop below $10 (about 70 kWhs), your service will be temporarily discontinued until you add to your account.

Whether you live in a rented apartment or a home that you own, pre-paying for electricity has several benefits. You don't have to worry about being hit with a bill that is higher than you expected at the end of the month. Once you pre-pay, you know that your electricity is taken care of for a while. Once you get into the routine of pre-paying, you will get to know about how much electricity you typically use, which will allow you to predict how often you should purchase more kWhs.

With prepaid electricity, you do not have to pay a high connection fee or wait for installation. There is just a small, one-time account setup fee. Your service can begin on the same day you open your account. It's easy to keep track of your account balance and add to your account online. Top off your kWhs whenever it is convenient for you—on your lunch break, while riding the bus, or while waiting for the kids to get home from school.

Frontier Utilities offers several month to month, pay-as-you-go electricity plans. When you sign up, you are assured that your rate will stay the same for at least three months. No deposit or credit check is required.
