How to Organize Your Spring Cleaning

How to Organize Your Spring Cleaning

The idea of spring cleaning can feel overwhelming. There are so many rooms to clean and so many tasks to tackle! The secret to successful spring cleaning lies in proper organization. Practice these organization tips to make spring cleaning more manageable and restore your home to its clean, pristine condition without pulling your hair out.

Gather all of your supplies in one place.

You can waste so much time scurrying from room to room, looking for the right mop or sponge. If you keep all of your springtime cleaning supplies in one place, you'll save time and energy. Large, 20-gallon plastic buckets are perfect for housing everything from mops to furniture polish. Keep a smaller bucket on hand to hold items as you carry them from room to room. As soon as you're done cleaning for the day, return everything to the 20-gallon bucket.

Tackle one room at a time.

When you jump from room to room, it's easy to forget what you've already done. To keep yourself organized, start by making a list of rooms on paper. Under each room name, make a list of tasks you need to complete in that specific room. For example, under "bathroom," you could write "clean out cabinet, scrub tub, sort through old towels." Cross off tasks as you complete them to give yourself a sense of accomplishment.

Assign tasks to family members.

If you live with a friend or family members, assign springtime cleaning tasks to each person to ensure everyone knows what they're responsible for. An easy way to do this is to write one person's initials next to each task on your room list. You could also color-code tasks. For instance, you could write the tasks you'll complete yourself in black and those your partner will do in red.

Schedule cleaning time each day or week.

Spring cleaning will seem a lot more manageable if you tackle it a little at a time. So, for the next few weeks, write "cleaning time" into your schedule. You could dedicate an hour each day, or dedicate five hours each Saturday -- whatever works best for your needs.
