5 Home Maintenance Tips for Summer

5 Home Maintenance Tips for Summer

Summer is in the air! It's time to get outside and tackle those home maintenance tasks you've been putting off through the chilly winter and wet spring. These five home maintenance tips for summer will ensure you get your home into tip-top shape without too much hassle.

Use diluted bleach to scrub away mold and mildew.

After a damp spring, it's not uncommon for mold and mildew to begin growing on fences, siding, and even window frames. You can nip this mold in the bud if you prepare a mixture of bleach and water and use it to wipe down all the moldy areas. A cup of bleach in a gallon of water is sufficient. Be sure to cover any nearby plants with tarps to protect them from bleach that may drip down as you wipe.

Clear your AC drain line with a shop vac.

If your air conditioner's condensate drain line clogs, you may end up with puddles of water around the unit. A good way to clear it is to hold a shop vac hose up to the end of the drain line. The vacuum should suck out any debris, clearing the hose. You can then pour a cup of bleach down the drain line's access pipe to prevent additional clogs from forming.

Soak grill grates in vinegar.

Grill grates can be difficult to clean when they're layered with gunk from last summer's barbecues. An easy way to clean them is to remove them and place them in a tote filled with water and vinegar. Let them soak for a few hours, then scrub them clean.

Seal crawlspace leaks with spray foam.

Temperature fluctuations can cause cracks and gaps to form in the walls of your crawlspace. An easy way to seal these cracks is with a can of spray foam insulation from your local hardware store. Spray it into the cracks, allowing it to expand and form an impenetrable barrier.

Fill asphalt cracks with a repair kit.

Purchase an asphalt repair kit at a home improvement store and follow the instructions in the kit to fill small cracks in asphalt. The filler needs to dry for at least a day before you drive on it. Filling cracks early prevents them from expanding.
