5 Home Renovation Trends for 2018

5 Home Renovation Trends for 2018

Has the time come to make some changes to your home? A few simple touch-ups can make your entire space feel exciting again. Whether you just want to change up your color scheme or you're thinking of a more extensive remodel, here are five home renovation trends to keep in mind:

1. Brass Accents

Brass is essentially the metal of the year for 2018! If you're remodeling a living room or dining room, look for accent pieces like mirrors and tables that feature hints of brass. If you're remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, consider using brass hardware on cabinets and choosing brass faucets to match. Jewel-toned color schemes, which are also becoming quite popular in 2018, compliment brass very well.

2. Wider Doorways

If you are making some bigger changes to your walls or room layout, consider widening your doorways while you are at it. This makes homes more accessible to those in wheelchairs and scooters. If you have older relatives or are thinking of "aging in place" in your home, the wider doorways will come in handy. Wider doorways also make your space feel more open and airy.

3. Open Shelving

Cabinets will never completely go out of style but now there is an alternative: open shelving. If you'll be renovating your kitchen, consider using open shelves in place of some cabinets; you can store frequently used items like your pots and pans on the shelves. A few open shelves in a living room or dining room can also add storage capacity to your space.

4. Smart Systems

When replacing outlets and appliances in 2018, always opt for the smart version. Smart appliances and accessories, which integrate with your home's WiFi connection, make it easy to control your appliances and electronics remotely. You can even control your lights, thermostat, refrigerator and coffee pot with just your voice via a smart system.

5. Repurposed Materials

Whether you're replacing a floor or redesigning a whole room, keep your eyes open for repurposed or recycled materials. Barn beams and reclaimed lumber are especially common. By choosing these items, you are minimizing waste while also giving your home a unique, rustic vibe.
