5 Tips for a Smooth Move

5 Tips for a Smooth Move

Moving can be stressful, whether you're moving across state lines or just across town. You might need to adapt to a new job or a new neighborhood, rearrange your furniture, or get used to new roommates. Between the packing, unpacking, and settling in, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. If you follow the tips below, your move will progress smoothly and you'll be settled in no time.

1. Break Tasks Down Into Smaller Tasks

A to-do list is essential when you're planning a move, but make sure you avoid putting overly large, burdensome tasks on that list. Looking at a list of tasks such as "pack" and "find a new apartment" can feel overwhelming. If you break these tasks into smaller tasks, such as "pack clothing" and "call three landlords to schedule appointments," your list will feel more manageable. Cross items off as you complete them so you can visualize your progress.

2. Hire a Great Moving Company

A good moving company will get your items to your new home safely. A great moving company will go above and beyond with extra services like packing and temporary storage to make your life easier during the move. Hire the best moving company you can afford; the cost is worth the lack of headaches.

3. Leave Yourself Extra Time

Make sure you schedule your move a few days before you have to do anything else important. For instance, if the kids start school August 10th, plan on moving in by August 5th, at the latest. You won't be in as much of a rush this way.

4. Clean Your New Home Before Moving Anything In

Trying to simultaneously clean your new home and unpack everything will feel overwhelming, and you'll probably trip over more than one box in the process. To help your move go smoothly, arrive to your new home a few hours before the movers so you can have the space clean before they unload any boxes.

5. Measure Everything First

There are few situations more frustrating than arriving to your new home and finding that your sofa doesn't fit through the front door. Measure everything first so you don't waste time packing and transporting furniture that does not fit.
